The LEGO Batman Movie (2017) Poster

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

WARNER BROS.

(2017)

Certificate PG   –   Animation | Action | Adventure | Comedy | Family |Fantasy

Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.
Summary: In the irreverent spirit of The LEGO® Movie, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.
Director:

Chris McKay

Stars:

Jenny Slate, Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Zoë Kravitz

Watch Trailer:

The Playlist | Oliver Lyttelton
“Lord knows the superhero genre could use some fun poked at it and we were psyched to see the film, but while there’s some fun to be had, it can’t help but feel like a missed opportunity.”

THE BUZZ: Mainly we’re interested in seeing Batman forced with an ultimatum to loosen up a bit as Robin is introduced to the LEGOverse. Despite the Caped Crusader’s global popularity, he will need to channel his inner Emmet if he wants to perform as well as The LEGO Movie.

Fifty Shades Darker (2017) Poster

FIFTY SHADES DARKER

UNIVERSAL PICTURES

(2017)

Certificate R   –   Drama | Romance

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.
Summary: While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.
Director:

James Foley

Stars:

Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Tyler Hoechlin, Bella Heathcote

Watch Trailer:

THE BUZZ: I have zero familiarity with the novels, but Darker seems like a much more interesting movie than the original since Kim Basinger plays Elena Lincoln, the Grey family friend who wound up deflowering young Christian. Too bad you couldn’t take the trio of Elena, Christian, and Anastasia Steele out of the dreary Northwest setting and deposit them an environment that’s as steamy as their group dynamic. Reports indicate there’s much less audience interest in Darker than its predecessor, which would be a shock to the overall franchise.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) Poster

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT

(2017)

Certificate R   –   Action | Crime | Thriller

After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.
Summary: Legendary hitman John Wick is forced to back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.
Director:

Chad Stahelski

Stars:

Ruby Rose, Keanu Reeves, Bridget Moynahan, Ian McShane

Watch Trailer:

THE BUZZ: Keanu Reeves returns to dispatch of more baddies in both stylish and gruesome ways. John Wick had everything I wanted in an action movie: wide-frame, super intricate, non-stop to the point of fatigue action and fantastical world-building. John Wick: Chapter 2 looks to double down on the goodness of the first, giving us an expanded look inside the underworld of assassins that Wick exists in, and a promise of bigger and crazier stunts and fight scenes. Bonus for the the Neo/Morpheus reunion with Laurence Fishburne appearing as the mysterious Bowery King. I’m looking forward to seeing this one on the biggest screen possible. – Vanessa

Jolly LLB 2 (2017) Poster

Jolly LLB 2

(2017)

  –   Comedy | Drama

Jolly is a clumsy lawyer who is faced with representing the most critical court case of his career.
Director:

Subhash Kapoor

Stars:

Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla

Watch Trailer:

THE BUZZ: In this sequel to the National Award Winner for Best Feature Film, a new all-star cast revisits the concept of a small-time lawyer who lands in big-time trouble. Akshay Kumar and Huma Qureshi star, with Arshad Warsi, who played the lead role in the original, appearing in a supporting role. The director of both Jolly LLB movies, Subhash Kapoor, also created the satirical dramedy Phas Gaye Re Obama.

A United Kingdom (2016) Poster

A UNITED KINGDOM

FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES

(2016)

Certificate PG-13   –   Biography | Drama | Romance

Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana causes an international stir when he marries a white woman from London in the late 1940s.
Summary: A United Kingdom is the true story of the forbidden love of King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white woman from London, which caused an international uproar when they decided to marry in the late 1940s just as apartheid was being introduced into South Africa. It was a decision that altered the course of African history.
Director:

Amma Asante

Stars:

David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Jack Davenport, Tom Felton

Watch Trailer:

The Hollywood Reporter | Deborah Young
“Though Asante is no stylist or and no very deep psychologist, she is adept at reaching an audience through direct storytelling”

THE BUZZ: Belle director Amma Asante returns with a historical drama that has an awards sheen but is tethered to the ground by a direct, no-frills approach to storytelling. As you can imagine, the entire project is held up by Oyelowo and Pike’s on-screen chemistry.

Kedi (2016) Poster

KEDI

OSCILLOSCOPE

(2016)

Certificate Unrated   –   Documentary

A profile of an ancient city and its unique people, seen through the eyes of the most mysterious and beloved animal humans have ever known, the Cat.
Summary: Hundreds of thousands of Turkish cats roam the metropolis of Istanbul freely. For thousands of years they’ve wandered in and out of people’s lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, the cats of Istanbul live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame –and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to the people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could
Director:

Ceyda Torun

Stars:

Bülent Üstün

Watch Trailer:

Variety Joe Leydon
[A] splendidly graceful and quietly magical documentary.

THE BUZZ: This Turkish documentary, the debut feature for director Ceyda Torun, turns the cameras on a group of stray cats as they amble around their customary haunts in Istanbul. While the film indeed exposes the day-to-day goings-on of felines, each with a distinct character, what ultimately ends up on screen appears to be a rich portrait of a very ancient city full of equally interesting and distinct individuals. I’m looking forward to exploring Istanbul in a different way – with some stray cats as my guide. – Bret
