It is pastoral charity that moves us “to go out to encounter those who are at a distance, and once found, to start down the road of welcome, accompaniment, discernment and integration into the ecclesial community.”

The letter that Pope Francis sent to the bishops of Buenos Aires in response to the document, “Basic Criteria for the Application of Chapter Eight of Amoris Laetitia,” which concern also sacraments to divorcees, revolves around this premise.

The Pope is clear: the Argentinian text shows the sense of apostolic exhortation — that of “accompanying, discerning and integrating the fragility” — making it clear that “there are no other interpretations.” The document by the bishops, ensured the Pope, “will do much good” especially for that “pastoral charity” which it fully captures.

The text issued by the bishops of Buenos Aires is “a true example of accompaniment for the priests,” explained the Pope, noting the importance of the closeness “of the bishop with his clergy and of the clergy with the bishop.”

In fact, he wrote, “the closest neighbor” to the bishop is the priest and the commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself begins for ”us bishops precisely with our priests.” Of course, pastoral charity intended as a continual search for those distant is tiring. This is a “person-to-person” pastoral approach where ”programmatic, organizational and legal interventions, albeit necessary, are not enough.”

Of the four “pastoral attitudes” indicated — “welcome, accompany, discern and integrate” — the one least practiced, according to Francis, is discernment.
