Friday the 13th. Talk about the proper time to update some predictions, right? After the Golden Globes and the Directors Guild announcements, the race for Academy Award nominations is perhaps beginning to come into focus. With ballots being due today for the Oscars and only a few weeks to go before the nomination results are announced, this is when you really need to have a feel for the race. I do think I know more or less what’s going to happen, at least in broad strokes, but between now and then the updates will seek clarity. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again…it’s crunch time.87th Annual Academy Awards Set Up

What you’ll see below is more than a slight tinker, mainly taking into account the recent precursors. As such, there’s some small changes almost everywhere. Probably most notable is the upward mobility of Arrival and Lion, both of which have seen solid returns of late. There’s some speculating on a Best Picture/Best Director split between La La Land and Moonlight, but I’m not ready to go there yet. As I mention every year around this time, it’s bad business and goes in the face of statistics/history to predict a split, even if we’ve been seeing them occasionally of late. There’s a possibility that Damien Chazelle or Barry Jenkins could take Director even if their film loses to the other in Picture, but it’s a discussion for another time. Right now, it’s just the moment to soak in some new predictions…
